Re: Grounding status of participle in 1 Peter 3:7

A number of people have commented they do not consider what I do to qualify as ‘discourse analysis’ because it does not move above the sentence level. I will leave that to you to decide.

Re: Grounding status of participle in 1 Peter 3:7

Hi Mitch, I can already hear the grumblings about how metalanguage is the problem here, so note my purpose is not to explain or defend it. You are using the terms I defined at the outset of the essay, but do not expect them to be universally understood or adopted here. The key question I was trying ...

Re: 1 Corinthians 12:4-5 δὲ vs καὶ

Hi Phillip, Instead of trying to use the terminology in the grammar I'll try to restate what I see going on here in terms of sets. I would view δἐ here introducing a comment on a set, whereas καἰ is adding another member to the same set or potentially adding larger sets together. Set A Set A1: 4 Δια...

Re: Campbell: Advances in the Study of Greek

Not sure how this will come out, and there were some previous comments that I omitted: Cliff Kvidahl I'm sorry, but I find Porter's tone appalling. His undermining remark about Steve Runge's DA only available in a software package is comical when you consider his own publications with Brill are far ...

Re: Campbell: Advances in the Study of Greek

The framework question is certainly not something which will cause much grief among practicing textlinguists. Eons ago C. Westfall agreed[1] that being eclectic is what 'Discourse Analysis' is all about. If by framework we mean something like "Standard Theory" (an early form of generative...

Re: Campbell: Advances in the Study of Greek

I posted a reply to the Nerdy Language Majors thread on Facebook since that seemed to be where the discussion was initiated. https://www.facebook.com/groups/NerdyLanguageMajors/permalink/695659740536698/ Porter's entitled to his opinions, but it seems to be degenerating into him disagreeing with lin...

Re: Mainline, Background and Historical Present in Mark 1

Just to clarify, I view the distinction between mainline and offline as between that which advances the discourse in a given genre and that which does not. I illustrate this teaching by asking a student to tell a story using only past imperfective verbs. It ends up sounding like a long preamble, a s...

Re: Mainline, Background and Historical Present in Mark 1

Hi David, You are asking good questions. My description of the HP is of prototypical usage, so every bit of the description will not be found in every context. As you say, these two instances in Mark 1 are indeed transitions. But the one in vv. 11–12 is to the denouement, the epilogue, so there's no...

Re: Rank shifting

SFL's description of rank-shifting has the strength of capturing the structural changes that occur to create this phenomenon, whereas grammars might simply consider it a complex or substitute form. It is an elegant description of the structure. However, observing that rankshift has occurred (e.g. an...

Re: Discourse Use of Καί

I realise this thread is way old, but i didnt want to start a new discussion if there was already a thread. {Mod note: Actually, this involves a different sense of the word καί, so I would have split it anyway. --scc} In this sense, while it is common to talk about the wide semantic range of και an...
