Chrysostom, 15th Homily on Ephesians Τί οὖν, ἂν ᾖ,

While disciples are obviously believers, is the converse true? To me, to call someone a μαθητής is probably saying something more than that they believe. Does it not perhaps carry a connotation of obedience and sincerity - certainly this might be said of Ananias of Damascus, Dorcas, and Timothy. Cou...

Thank you for all your answers. I think my original question re Acts 11:20, should perhaps have been phrased: 'Is it possible that τινες is being used adjectivally rather than substantivally?' - I have read in a grammar (Blass) that its position when used adjectivally is unrestricted, and that it ca...

Please forgive me asking a very tiny point, but it might be of relevance to an argument advanced by one Joseph Prince, that we know that Ananias and Sapphira were unbelievers because Ananias is introduced in Acts 5:1 as Ἀνὴρ δέ τις Ἁνανίας, and that ἀνὴρ τις is a term used only of unbelievers (Acts ...

Re: οὐδέ in Galatians 3:28
Thanks, Stephen. Yes, I realised recently how similar 'and' and 'or' are in negative statements: 'no salt and pepper, please' has much the same effect as 'no salt or pepper, please'. I perhaps should clarify that Payne's statement came from his paper on οὐδέ in 1 Timothy 2:12. He builds up an empiri...

οὐδέ in Galatians 3:28
I read this to mean that in Christ, and particularly with salvation and baptism in view, there is no Jew and there is no Greek. One might say that, standing by the pool of b...

Re: The use of ἢ in 1Cor14:36
Putting it simply, I think Paul is referring to two possibilities: A - women should not speak in the church, which is what he is teaching; and B - women may speak in the church, which some at least of the Corinthians are claiming. The primary meaning of ἤ is 'or'. Verses 34-35 are a statement of A, ...

Re: 1 Tim 2:12 - should both infinitives apply to ANHR?
I looked this up in some of the older commentaries - Ellicott, Fairbairn, Bernard, Kelly - they all take it for granted that διδασκειν here is intransitive. For example, Kelly: But to teach I permit not a woman nor to e...

Re: Severian on 1 Corinthians 11:3
Remarkably, I came across a translation of the most difficult section of this today. It is in 'Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture: 1 and 2 Corinthians, Bray and Oden', p.105: 'Since man did not make woman, the question here does not concern the origin of woman. Rather it concerns only [the re...

Re: Severian on 1 Corinthians 11:3
Thanks very much, Stirling, that's tremendously helpful, and much appreciated. So attempting a rough translation, and no doubt bowdlerizing your more subtle points in the process: Εἰ ἀσεβῶς ἐκλαμβάνοι τις, κατὰ τὸν τῆς θεότητος λόγον, εἰ δὲ (20) εὐσεβῶς, κατὰ τὸν τῆς οἰκονομίας Lampe gives 'ordering...
