Re: Homeric, Classical, Koine...whats the REAL difference?
What were you expectations 6 years ago in studying Greek and your failings now that leave you with the feelng of disappointment? First of all, I would like to thank ALL of you for your responses! They have all been very helpful. Perhaps I set the bar too high... As far as κοινή texts go, I expected...

Homeric, Classical, Koine...whats the REAL difference?
One difficulty encountered by αὐτοδίδακτοι like myself is seeing the big picture. I've read everything in the NT except Romans, 1&2 Corith, and Hebrews. I am still very disappointed in my abilities after these 6+ years of studying. I try to read Xenophon (which is supposed to be an "easy&qu...

Re: Mark 4:29 παραδῷ allow, or ripen

Re: The meaning of Παῦλος
Ahh, thank you Jonathan. That pretty much clears it up. Thats what I get for not knowing any Latin
When I clicked on the Lewis and Short link and clicked "previous entry" it showed the adjective "paulus = little/small"

The meaning of Παῦλος
James F. McGrath told me (via Facebook IM) that παῦλος is an adjective meaning "small". I haven't been able to find it in LSJ or BDAG. Is this true? How popular was the name Παῦλος in the ancient world? Is it possible that Φ still had the hard P sound (Puh) in Paul's day (and location), an...

A useful tool for uneducated folks like me :)
http://www.odlt.org/ This is "The Online Dictionary of Language Terminology". I am forced to use it a lot in this forum to understand linguistic terminology (example: What the heck is "metalepsis"??!). It is very useful. It has easy to understand definitions, great examples, and ...

Re: Mark 7:10-13 Anacoluthon?
That is, a prohibition "no longer allow" would require μηκέτι as its negative. That οὐκέτι is used here requires that ἀφίετε be understood as an indicative. See, eg, BDF 426, 427/4; Wallace p723-4, esp 724C. Hmmm, that is a good point... Can we be certain that ουκετι and μηκετι always fol...

Re: Mark 7:10-13 Anacoluthon?
Why is it that no translation of those I checked seems to have taken "αφιετε" as an imperative? It is most easily understood here as such, in which case the imperative clause is the apodosis. [Mark 7] [11] υμεις δε λεγετε εαν ειπη ανθρωπος τω πατρι η τη μητρι κορβαν ο εστιν δωρον ο εαν εξ...

Re: Mark 7:10-13 Anacoluthon?
Thank you very much for your informative reply Alex. Perhaps this isn't an anacoluthon per se, but am I wrong that this still doesn't look right? I understand that an apodosis wouldn't necessarily have to agree with the protasis in "person". As you mentioned, it is something we do all the ...
