Re: John 21 ἀγαπάω / φιλέω
Benjamin Warfield, in his Terminology of Love in the New Testament, part 2, PTR 1918, 155, after reviewing a few cases in the LXX in which φιλέω and ἀγαπάω occur together, concludes: 'In all the combinations of ἀγαπᾶν and φιλεῖν, the higher role is assigned to ἀγαπᾶν.' https://drive.google.com/file/...

Re: λέγω with infinitive (MPol 3.1)
In the first part of the clause, the proconsul is the subject of πείθειν, and perhaps I would have expected to see an αὐτόν as the object of λέγοντος and 'subject' of κατοικεῖραι if the subject had changed. In most cases, one of the characteristics of the genitive absolute is that the subject of th...

λέγω with infinitive (MPol 3.1)

Thanks very much, Carl. I certainly could swallow it, but it would also be nice to have some usage (apart from this case) to demonstrate the meaning of 'lie down on'. It has been suggested to me that what Wallace [Exegetical Syntax 425ff] calls the permissive middle might be relevant here - somethin...

Re: κήρυκας ὑποστρωννύμενοι
'Strew' is one of the meanings given in LSJ, so is not necessarily etymologising, but I do agree with Stephen that it is perfectly possible that the Christians were being spread out - I still have the difficulty with υπο- rather than επι-. Thanks, Carl, for the Isaiah reference. Still they were spre...

Re: κήρυκας ὑποστρωννύμενοι
Yes, I should think the sense must be "made to lie down on a bed of trumpet shells", the sense of ὑποστρώννυμαι being, "make one's bed of xxx (acc.)", i.e. put down a bedding material and lie down on it. Sorry, Carl I was slow (as too often) to grasp that you were suggesting (if...

Re: κήρυκας ὑποστρωννύμενοι
Thanks very much. If it is the Christians who are being spread out, then why υπο- rather than επι-? ἐπιστορέννῦμι does exist, although not so common. Is υπο- perhaps conveying something other than physically under? I suppose I naturally find it easier to think of it being the shells that are strewn....

[Martyrdom of Polycarp, 2.4] ὑποστρώννυω (listed under ὑποστόρεννῦμι in L...

Re: Gal. 4:13-14
For my clarification: this is the "object clause" in question , διʼ ἀσθένειαν τῆς σαρκὸς εὐηγγελισάμην ὑμῖν τὸ πρότερον and this is a "noun phrase", τὸν πειρασμὸν ὑμῶν ἐν τῇ σαρκί μου Correct? Yes, except that I think I would include the ὅτι in the object clause: ὅτι διʼ ἀσθένει...

Re: Gal. 4:13-14
Could that type of καὶ work with the Lachmann full stop? Thus, I suppose, remembrance ὅτι διʼ ἀσθένειαν τῆς σαρκὸς εὐηγγελισάμην ὑμῖν τὸ πρότερον provides the time or circumstances for remembrance of τὸν πειρασμὸν ὑμῶν ἐν τῇ σαρκί μου. I doubt that there is any reason why not. I also doubt that it ...
