Re: Septuagint translation of Daniel 11:35

You need to bear in mind that the later recensions generally revised the Greek toward a more literalistic, word-for-word translation. In some cases, such as the kaige, even to the point of being bad Greek. To use a modern example, a friend of mine calls the American Standard Version (the ancestor of...

Re: Septuagint translation of Daniel 11:35

First off, I misspelled Rahlfs; I forgot the "s" at the end (an unfortunate habit of mine). Rahlfs-Hanhart has συντέλεια. Here's the full verse: καὶ ἐκ τῶν συνιέντων διανοηθήσονται εἰς τὸ καθαρίσαι ἑαυτοὺς καὶ εἰς τὸ ἐκλεγῆναι καὶ εἰς τὸ καθαρισθῆναι ἕως καιροῦ συντελείας· ἔτι γὰρ καιρὸς ε...

Re: Septuagint translation of Daniel 11:35

The LXX is a complicated beast. That being said, you would benefit from taking a look at Muraoka's Hebrew-Greek comparisons in the appendix to Hatch and Redpath (repr. Baker Academic). For Hebrew קץ (kēṣ), he lists 16 different Greek words/phrases that are used (p. 339). Based on that, is seems pret...

Re: Hebrew?

For a traditional grammar approach, I would suggest Futato, Beginning Biblical Hebrew (Eisenbrauns), or Pratico/van Pelt, Basics of Biblical Hebrew (Zondervan); for a linguistic/ESL-type approach, Cook & Holmstedt, Beginning Biblical Hebrew (Baker Academic) is a good one—they use a graphic novel...

Re: Words translated "Therefore"

You might find Steve Runge's book, Discourse Grammar of the Greek New Testament helpful. Discourse grammar looks at the connective particles, which is the ones you are asking about. You could also check the archives, as this question comes up about once every year or two. Some of us, generally the c...

Re: Best ways to denote / give away books

Theological Book Network will ship them to seminaries in the 2/3 world. That's what I do with books I no longer need/want.

Re: Greetings χαιρετε

American Classicists generally (not universally) make a distinction. In my experience, it is mainly Seminary-trained and Christian-college-trained Hellenists who pronounce an o-micron as an alpha instead of a shorter form of an o-mega. That's not a function of Erasmian itself, but a function of the ...

Re: Accenting in -σις, -εως nouns

And a postscript: brain fart about πόλις. I was thinking strictly of nouns ending in -σις and so had blocked out the obvious paradigm!
