Those roots

Hello guys,

Does anyone know how or where to look up the roots of Greek words?

Re: "upon this rock" in Matthew 16:18

κ ἀγὼ δέ σοι λέγω ὅτι σὺ εἶ Πέτρος, καὶ ἐπὶ ταύτῃ τῇ πέτρᾳ οἰκοδομήσω μου τὴν ἐκκλησίαν καὶ πύλαι ᾅδου οὐ κατισχύσουσιν αὐτῆς. This is not a good argument on more than one level, but particularly here καί coordinates the clauses, not the nouns. In other news, when connecting substantives, when are ...

Re: "upon this rock" in Matthew 16:18

Hi Jeffery. I'm going to argue from the discourse analysis perspective here. Reading the text here in English and even in the Greek with just a " translation " understanding can make the context appear to suggest that Jesus was referring to Peter here. However, I would like to direct your ...

Re: Matthew 12:40

I see what you did there Jeffery... but the other comments are right. You're not really doing anything with ωσπερ and "for the same reason" doesn't really convey the same idea that the Greek is trying to get across. You gotta look at them together, like a type of construction. ωσπερ : BDAG...

Textual variant in Jude 1:6 - αλυτοις

Hello fellow Greekers. I found that two codices in Jude 1:6, codices 33 and 2344, read: ...εἰς κρίσιν μεγάλης ἡμέρας δεσμοῖς αλυτοις και ἀϊδίοις ὑπὸ ζόφον τετήρηκεν· instead of ...εἰς κρίσιν μεγάλης ἡμέρας δεσμοῖς ἀϊδίοις ὑπὸ ζόφον τετήρηκεν· (NA28 text) I've checked BDAG, and a few other online lex...

Understanding names in Koine Greek

Hi. I've come across a certain translation of the NT that transliterates Πετρος as "Petros" into the english, and in every instance "Πετρος" occurs, regardless of the case/inflection, it is transliterated into english as "Petros" instead of Peter. My question is, was &q...

In that case, this is nominative, so, I guess it's likely referring to a black entity and not the mere quality of being black (blackness).

Re: Grammatical question about Barnabas 4:9.

Correction: Melas, not megas... 4:9 But I, wanting to be writing much (not as a teacher, but instead as it is being-proper for one who is loving to not be leaving in the dust anything from the things which we have), made-every-effort to be writing to you as an offscouring of you. For-this-reason, ma...

Grammatical question about Barnabas 4:9.

I have a question about "ο μελας" in Barnabas 4:9. ...ἵνα μὴ σχῇ παρείσδυσιν ὁ μέλας. Should it be translated as the "black one" or as "blackness"? Megas is an adjective, and I suppose the definite article would make it function substantively, but does the definite arti...
