Re: Convertible propositions (John 1:4)

Maybe we should review several different examples of subject and predicate propositions to see if a pattern emerges.

What happens when neither the S or PN have the definite article? Can that be convertible as well?

Convertible Propositions

Does anyone here know of any good studies or books that do a good detailed job of addressing Subset and convertible propositions?

Thanks in advance

Re: Convertible propositions (John 1:4)

A thread resurrected from the dead. :D καὶ ἡ ζωὴ ἦν τὸ φῶς τῶν ἀνθρώπων What is the significance of the use of the article with the subject as well as the predicate nominative? Is this common in Johns writings? Think about these sentences: The Greek captain [a specific one that we know and aware of...

Re: Convertible propositions (John 1:4)

It cannot be that ἡ ζωὴ ἦν τὸ φῶς τῶν ἀνθρώπων is the same as τὸ φῶς ἦν ἡ ζωὴ τῶν ἀνθρώπων. I don't know where this is coming from. It seems to be a mistake on the part of Robertson. The entire phrases must be interchanged. That is [ἠ ζωὴ] ἦν [τὸ φῶς τῶν ἀνθρώπων] can be interchanged thus: [τὸ φῶς ...

Re: Qualitative verses adjectival

Not all of us have Mounce's book (mine's in storage), I pulled mine out of storage (Book Shelf) :D so it's really hard to react to what Mounce says unless you quote it. (In fact, the way the issue is set forth suggests that something is garbled.) Not sure what is garbled. Also, Mounce's book is an ...

Qualitative verses adjectival

In Mounce's Basics of Biblical Greek the author states that the Attributive use of the adjective gives a quality or an attribute to the word that it is modifying. What is the difference between this adjectival use and a qualitative uses such as in John 1:1 c? John 1:1 c we see the subject / predicat...

Re: The term "Emphasis"

How does that idea impact the argument that word order establishes elevated thought? Does this mean that word order does not absolutely establish emphasis? I realize that Greek can be very random in its order unlike English but people are creatures of habit and there is normally a word order used t...

Re: The term "Emphasis"

What is the proper understanding of the term "Emphasis" as is used in Koine when emphasis is being placed by word order? There never has been a "proper understanding" for the term. It has been used to mean just about anything and everything. That's why Steve says its been abused...
