Re: Acts 17:28 Τοῦ γὰρ καὶ γένος ἐσμέν.
You know, at times I find the the classical scholars’ (plural!!) reasoning hard to follow. It would appear that translation is dictating syntax analysis. Since some choose to translate προ του w/finite verb as if it were πρὸ τούτο, (a pattern found 2000+ TLG-E), we reverse the process in syntax ana...

Re: Acts 17:28 Τοῦ γὰρ καὶ γένος ἐσμέν.
Τοῦ γὰρ καὶ γένος ἐσμέν. Besides the emplyment of the fossilised ὁ μέν ... ὁ δέ ... etc structural markers, is this τοῦ in the quotation of Aratus the only NT example of ὁ employed as a relative? As the opening lines of one of the most widely read (and perhaps studied and recited), copied and trans...

Re: Aorist after κωλύω or after the negative?
In the phrasing Ἄφετε τὰ παιδία, καὶ μὴ κωλύετε αὐτὰ ἐλθεῖν πρός με· (Matthew 19:14), is the aorist used after the negative statement μὴ κωλύετε, because the κωλύειν itself takes the aorist, or for some other reason? Cf. Ἄφετε τὰ παιδία ἔρχεσθαι πρός με· μὴ κωλύετε αὐτά· (Mark 10:14). I think this ...

Re: Phil.4:10 Why is ἠκαιρεῖσθε middle here?
Ἐχάρην δὲ ἐν κυρίῳ μεγάλως, ὅτι ἤδη ποτὲ ἀνεθάλετε τὸ ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ φρονεῖν· ἐφ’ ᾧ καὶ ἐφρονεῖτε, ἠκαιρεῖσθε δέ. What explanation can be put forward to describe why ἠκαιρεῖσθε is in the middle voice here? [The antonym εὐκαιρεῖν is used in the active voice, both absolutely ἐλεύσεται δὲ ὅταν εὐκαιρήσῃ. ...

Re: John 1:1-5 punctuation
Well, I guess I shouldn't have used that term (lectio difficilior) in this instance; what I intended to say was simply that the phrasing is as awkward and less than fully satisfactory no matter which of the alternative punctuations one chooses

Re: John 1:1-5 punctuation
I'm not sure whether this question can be resolved without involving issues of theological implications and doctrinal history -- Metzger's note points to that; Raymond Brown's Community of the Beloved Disciple is speculative, but notably suggests three generations of growth of the gospel of John and...

Re: Back after many years
This is, I believe, the Ellen Adams from whom I last heard some time in November of 1999! There's been one heck of a lot of water under the bridge since those days; there are a few of us from that time who're still around, but not many. It's good to "see" you back here.

Re: past imperfect indicative of pascho, to suffer
When I posted my last response I had not seen Jonathan's answer and his reference to Decker, for which I am again grateful. I am quickly realizing that the simple rules I am absorbing from Black's "Learn to Read New Testament Greek" are guidelines rather than rules. The plot thickens and ...

Re: Limitations on the use of recursive relative phrases.
A syntactic structure like, "The man ate the fish, which he caught in the stream, which flows into the lake, which many people visit on weekends.", doesn't occur in Koine Greek in the way it does in English. That seems to be because of the variation in contextualising strategies between t...

Re: Listing the Hellenistic Corpus
I was thinking that Stephen H had initiated this ahead, but I see it's Jonathan R. I'm one who has felt uncomfortable about using the GNT or even the Greek Bible in the fullest sense as a corpus for vocabulary and usage. I'm inclined to think that for Hellenistic vocabulary and usage one ought to de...
