Re: Aorist indicative with future temporal reference
Sorry, I think I may be abusing this forum by prolonging this closed discussion. But I'd like to ask more questions, in case anyone is still following this... So far the feedback has been very helpful. Another reference that I keep encountering is to the fact that there exist other 'tenseless' langu...

Re: Aorist indicative with future temporal reference
Perhaps someone could help me answer one more question. I keep hearing Constantine Campbell and others repeatedly reference a statistic about verbs in the aorist, without substantiation as to what the data are based on - Paraphrasing: "Aorist indicatives refer to the past 85% of the time."...

Re: Aorist indicative with future temporal reference

A citation to that sources would be amazing, if available. Thanks! See here for a discussion of o...

Re: Aorist indicative with future temporal reference
Here are Campbell's examples from Basics of Verbal Aspect in Biblical Greek: Future Aorist More commonly, the aorist tense-form may be used in future-referring contexts. [...] Mark 11:24 διὰ τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν, πάντα ὅσα προσεύχεσθε καὶ αἰτεῖσθε, πιστεύετε ὅτι ἐλάβετε , καὶ ἔσται ὑμῖν. Therefore, I tel...

Re: Aorist indicative with future temporal reference
The Syntax and Semantics of the Verb in Classical Greek An excellent and extremely systematic approach that carefully considers the interplay of verbs acting together in context. Lots of examples. Short. Uses examples from Classical Greek, but with translations to make them easy to follow. The Camb...

Re: Aorist indicative with future temporal reference
However, in the context we can see that Jesus is already being betrayed by Judas. It's already happening, but will be completed in the future. What about 1 Thessalonians 2:16? Paul says: "... ἔφθασεν δὲ ἐπ᾽ αὐτοὺς (τοὺς Ἰουδαίας) ἡ ὀργὴ εἰς τέλος" NASB: But wrath has come upon them (the J...

Re: Aorist indicative with future temporal reference
were there instances in which aorist indicative constructions (i.e. in the New Testament), commonly translated as past tense, were reinterpreted with future temporal reference? Can you give examples (Koine, from OT/NT or elsewhere) where aorist indicative should be interpreted with future temporal ...

Re: Aorist indicative with future temporal reference
