Thesis/Dissetation Topics

Post by MAubrey »

I made a comment about thesis/dissertation topics on Twitter here:

https://twitter.com/michaelgaubrey/stat ... 1062913034

And Jonathan Robie asked if I'd be willing to post a list here to B-Greek. I'll probably cross-post it to Koine-Greek.com, too. Much of this assumes a knowledge of linguistic terminology, so its much be meaningless to some people...

Nevertheless...
  • The semantics of gender marking in Greek nouns.
  • Noun incorporation and its relation to event structure.
  • Semantic scope & pre-articular modifiers.
  • The semantics of complementation strategies with modal verbs.
  • Lexical nominalization and the assimilation of arguments to NP syntax
  • Non-backgrounded adverbial participle+indicative as a type of serial verb construction.
This isn't the dozens that I claimed, but for just off the top of my head, it's a decent list.

What do you mean by this?

Quantifiers and demonstratives appear outside the scope of the Greek article. It's typologically weird and deserves a full treatment.

Do I see water trying to flow uphill?

PS: I'm not saying that there aren't environments where it might appear so, I'm just pointing out the need for care.

If I am understanding you right, a few articles have already been written on this. “The Syntax of Determiners in Attic Greek” by Noah D. Frederick comes to mind among a few other articles that I found. The CNTR database has all such words classified as such in its parsing scheme (which are marked as “E” in the CNTR collation) so it is easy for me to pull all the examples of that phenomenon from the New Testament. I was thinking about writing a paper on this as it applies to the New Testament, but it is very low on my to do list. But if someone else wants to work with the data I could probably help them out.

I would love to know more about different topics that would be acceptable for publication. This is a great forum for all things Greek.
