Accent placement for ἰών

Can anyone provide an explanation for why ἰών (active participle of εἶμι) is accented on the ultima? It would seem it should persist on the penult.

Smyth says: "The participle ἰών is accented like a second aorist." However, it doesn't really say why... :(
