Exod 4:16 and the be verb

Post by Scott Lawson »

καὶ αὐτός σοι προσλαλήσει πρὸς τὸν λαόν, καὶ αὐτὸς ἔσται σου στόμα, σὺ δὲ αὐτῷ ἔσῃ τὰ πρὸς τὸν θεόν.
(Exodus 4:16 LXX1)

What significance is there between the use of the active voice ἔσται and the passive voice ἔσῃ in the two clauses? Is ἔσῃ deponent so that there is no difference? What is the force of voice on a state verb and the be verb in particular?

Ah! It was just pointed out to me that ἔσται is also middle voice and that many future tense verbs tend to be middle voice.
