Free-time Reading on Foreign Language Vocabulary Development

Post by Jonathan Robie »

Here's an interesting study of The Impact of Free-time Reading on Foreign Language Vocabulary Development that Micheal Palmer pointed me to. I think that it demonstrates two things of interest to B-Greekers:
  • Learning content using a foreign language (CLIL) is a more effective way to learn a foreign language than learning the language per se.
  • Regular free time reading is really important
To me, this suggests that teaching directly from biblical texts, using lots of scaffolding techniques, is a promising approach, and that people who read regularly will do much better than people who don't.

The Journal of Language Teaching and Research has quite a few interesting articles like this, available for free as downloadable PDFs.
ἐξίσταντο δὲ πάντες καὶ διηποροῦντο, ἄλλος πρὸς ἄλλον λέγοντες, τί θέλει τοῦτο εἶναι;
