Jones - Translation and Style in the Old Greek Psalter

Post by Matthew Longhorn »

One for those who like the Septuagint
While some describe the Greek Psalter as a “slavish” or “interlinear” translation with “dreadfully poor poetry,” how would its original audience have described it? Positioning the translation within the developing corpus of Jewish-Greek literature, Jones analyzes the Psalter’s style based on the textual models and literary strategies available to its translator. She demonstrates that the translator both respects the integrity of his source and displays a sensitivity to his translation’s performative aspects. By adopting recognizable and acceptable Jewish-Greek literary conventions, the translator ultimately creates a text that can function independently and be read aloud or performed in the Jewish-Greek community.

For some reason it seems to be listed as both in the Septuagint Commentary Series as well as a the Septuagint Monograph series. Not sure what is going on there.

It clearly shouldn't be listed under the Septuagint Commentary Series; her doctoral supervisor, Mark Boda, is assigned to write on the Psalms.
FWIW, I was the external examiner for this dissertation.
The editors of the Septuagint Monograph Series are not listed, but I expect they are the same as the Septuagint Commentary Series.
Fun fact: all the people in this message have a McMaster Divinity College connection: Stan Porter (SCS editor) is president, Boda (supervisor) is a professor, Jones is a graduate, and I taught Hebrew there 2 decades ago.

Must be nice to see a dissertation you have been an examiner on reach publication. Hopefully you deemed it good at the time ;)

On the plus side, according to all the emails that keep hitting my junk mail folder, someone keeps trying to send me vast amounts of money. Turns out that I just need to enter a few basic bank details and I can afford that book after all!
