Diogenes 4.4 - supported reading and searching of Greek and Latin Texts

Post by Diogenes »

Hi all,

Durham University recently released a new version of its free Diogenes software and a new web app - both of which are available here: http://d.iogen.es/

WIth Diogenes you can search and read any Greek or Latin text with vocabulary and morphology support parallel to the text. It also has simple and inflected forms search tools and allows you to export files to TEI compatible XML formats. We designed the web app interface especially for use on phones and tablets. Please take a look and contact us at diogenes.application@gmail.com if you need help with installation.

Nice. The Web version gives access to lots of good material.

I downloaded the Mac version, and it does not let me download and use these same texts. And it isn't signed. Any chance you could make that work for people like me who read things offline sometimes?

And any chance the LSJ references could link to the text the refer to?

I had emailed in and got the texts which work with the desktop version.

Here is a link to the Greek files: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1l-YRG ... pysZ9AfVaF

Here is a link to the Latin files: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1l1I1F ... KMdbbDFfde

The desktop version works great and it has an awesome amount of text.

Apparently, my institutional Gmail account is not entirely friendly when it comes to sharing outside of the institutional google group. Rather than have to approve anyone who wants one of these datasets but who does not have the privilege of having an @sbts.edu email account, I have posted them on my website. They can be accessed at the links below:

I am finding that unicode accents and breathing marks sometimes cause problems. If you have a means of stripping them off you might not waste time wondering why you didn't locate something.

The string: τί ποτ᾿ ἐστὶ θεός failed. Something between ποτ᾿ and ἐστὶ caused the failure. τί ποτ᾿ works and ἐστὶ θεός works but ποτ᾿ ἐστὶ fails. I did a web search and then pasted the text form several different sources. Some worked others failed. Not my first experience with this. Stripped off all markings and the search worked.

I running Mojave 10.14.6 (18G3020).

Nathaniel, thanks for sharing the Diogenes text file links. I hope to download them soon. Where do I need to install them on my Mac? I already have the Diogenes update itself, but haven't installed it yet.

Just install them wherever you want and will be able to find them again. When you set up Diogenes it will have you provide the location of the files. I don't know if this is also true on Mac, but on Windows the files can't be in a folder that has non-Latin characters. So if you have a folder with a Greek name, I would avoid putting them there, just to be safe.

Great, thanks. I downloaded the library files yesterday. Will install everything this weekend and try it out. Have used the older Mac version of Diogenes for several years now, but lacked access to the TLG archives, except for the demo version online. It will be nice to have the Latin also. Up to now have used a program called Verba with the Latin L & S dictionary for desktop use. Will be nice to use along with the Logeion site.
