Online Latin / Using Greek to Learn Latin

Post by tdbenedict »

This is obviously a bit off-topic for this forum, but I am interested in learning latin.
1. Does anyone have any favorite online resources for doing that?
2. Even better, are there any learning resources (print or online) that use greek to teach latin?
Thanks!

Resources for Latin :
Grote's Notes can be downloaded as a zip file from http://humanum.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/Lexis/W ... eelock.zip
and are also available as web pages/pdfs at http://www.drshirley.org/latin/grote/index.html
Links to online resources keyed to Wheelock or the Cambridge Latin Course are at http://www.drshirley.org/latin/links/links01.html
Links to other Latin courses and resources are at http://www.drshirley.org/latin/links/links02.html
My old online Latin Course starts at http://www.drshirley.org/latin01/index.html
It's several years since I taught Latin online, so the web pages have not been updated for a while.
Hope this helps

It wasn't too long ago that most people who learned Greek were already exposed to Latin. Now I guess we're seeing more of the other way round.

If only my students had already been exposed to English grammar :-)

Even back when I was in elementary and middle school (after the earth had cooled but before the dinosaurs), I didn't really learn any English grammar until I took Latin. And yes, it helped with Greek... :)

Shirley has given you some good resources. Google is your friend here -- there are lots of online resources for Latin these days. A forum similar to ours here is textkit.com, which not only has a number of downloadable resources for free but a reasonably active forum where people delight in answering questions.

As for your second question, ah, no, not at all. As the latter posts in this thread indicate, the historical educational sequence was Latin first and then Greek. Older textbooks, such as Crosby & Schaeffer (which was my beginning text) simply assumed that the student would have Latin. They explain the dative of possession by stating that it works just like the Latin dative of possession, and then give a Latin example, puero gladius est, without an English translation... :) So you can find lots of especially older materials using Latin to explain Greek, but not vice versa.
