Lucian of Samosata’s A True History

Post by Josip Bošnjak »

Hello,
I want to share this interesting article about Lucian of Samosata.
Lucian is famous for his satirical works, and ‘A True History’ may be read as a piece of satire. Alternatively, this piece of writing may be interpreted as a work of science fiction and has sometimes been regarded to be the earliest known example of a work that can be placed within this genre.

I have allowed this post through, but please remember to contact a moderator to give us your real name so that we can change your screen name to match, via B-Greek policy.

I did my M.A. thesis on Lucian's De Morte Perigrini, and have both read and taught the Ἀληθῆ Διηγήματα. Not only is it loads of fun, but it's a great workout in Greek that is not too difficult, excellent for intermediate classes and for those seeking to expand their Greek horizons beyond the NT and the LXX. This edition is quite helpful:

What are the best versions of this text available in Greek online? Christophe Ricco used this during last summer's class, are there teaching resources for it?

I think the text I cited above is available as a PDF, courtesy of the authors. Nothing wrong with the Perseus text either. Don't know about "teaching resources." I used the text cited above.

You can download the pdf of the Nimis/Hayes' edition that Barry mentions from their website:

I read through that with someone a couple years ago and it was some of the most entertaining Greek I've read. Read through their edition of The Ass before that. I like their readers.
