τῶν ἐν [τῷ] κόσμῳ θαυμάτων in Basil-? and Gregory Nyssa

Post by Stirling Bartholomew »

The string: ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ is found in 25 places in Gregory of Nyssa. The string: ἐν κόσμῳ is found three times in Gregory of Nyssa .

The expression τῶν ἐν [τῷ] κόσμῳ θαυμάτων is found twice in Gregory of Nyssa once with [τῷ] and once without [τῷ]. The expression τῶν ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ θαυμάτων is also found once in Basil (auth?).
Gregory of Nyssa: THE MAKING OF MAN

The scope of our proposed enquiry is not small: it is second to none of the wonders of the world,-perhaps even greater than any of those known to us, because no other existing thing, save the human creation, has been made like to God:

Gregory of Nyssa: Lord's Prayer
Τί οὖν τοσοῦτον ἐπιζέεις κατ' αὐτοῦ τῷ θυμῷ, ῥᾳθυμήσαντός τινος, ἢ ἀποστατήσαντος, ἢ τάχα καταφρόνησιν ἐνδειξαμένου σοι κατὰ πρόςωπον, δέον πρὸς ἑαυτὸν βλέπειν, οἷος σὺ γέγονας τῷ δεσπότῃ τῷ πλάσαντί σε καὶ παραγαγόντι διὰ γενέσεως, καὶ κοινωνόν σε τῶν ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ θαυμάτων ποιήσαντι, τῷ προθέντι τὸν ἥλιον εἰς ἀπόλαυσιν, καὶ πάσας τὰς πρὸς τὸ ζῇν ἀφορμὰς ἐκ τῶν στοιχείων χαρισαμένῳ, ἐκ γῆς τε καὶ πυρὸς καὶ ἀέρος καὶ ὕδατος, τῷ παρασχομένῳ τὴν διανοητικὴν χάριν, τὴν ἀντιληπτικὴν αἴσθησιν, τὴν διακριτικὴν καλοῦ τε καὶ τοῦ χείρονος ἐπιστήμην;
Basil: Prophet Isaiah

Observations: The expression τῶν ἐν [τῷ] κόσμῳ θαυμάτων illustrates a frequent tendency for ἐν [τῷ] κόσμῳ to appear following an article. The article is not always matched with a subsequent substantive.

Unless my initial impression is wrong, all of these examples can be explained that κόσμῳ is not marked for definiteness/identifiability in focus.
