2 Corinthians 8:19

How do I work out the meaning of a Greek text? How can I best understand the forms and vocabulary in this particular text?

2 Corinthians 8:19

Post by Matthew Longhorn »

Ok, daft question time! I am reading through 2 Corinthians again and am actually enjoying it this time around and going quite swiftly. As I am going I am checking my understanding of the grammar by reading the Baylor handbook on that passage after I have read it. I have hit something that I am positive must be a mistake in the Baylor handbook, but I have been wrong many a time before
2 Corinthians 8:19 reads
οὐ μόνον δέ, ἀλλὰ καὶ χειροτονηθεὶς ὑπὸ τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν συνέκδημος ἡμῶν ⸀σὺν τῇ χάριτι ταύτῃ τῇ διακονουμένῃ ὑφʼ ἡμῶν πρὸς τὴν ⸁[αὐτοῦ] τοῦ κυρίου δόξαν καὶ προθυμίαν ἡμῶν

The key word here is final ἡμῶν which as a first person plural pronoun should surely be translated as “our”. The Baylor handbook translates this as “your” here.
The entire verse verse is translated as “but not only (this), but also he was appointed by the churches as our travelling companion with this grace that is being administered by us to the glory of The Lord (himself) and your eagerness”

What am I missing?!?

You are quite right Matthew - ἡμῶν is 'our'; 'your' would be ὑμῶν.

So it's either a typo in the handbook, or there may possibly be an alternative reading that has ὑμῶν as opposed to ἡμῶν at the end which the Baylor handbook was using.

Quite possibly Baylor's handbook is based on the Textus Receptus, which does have the reading ὑμῶν at the end:

οὐ μόνον δὲ ἀλλὰ καὶ χειροτονηθεὶς ὑπὸ τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν συνέκδημος ἡμῶν σὺν τῇ χάριτι ταύτῃ τῇ διακονουμένῃ ὑφ' ἡμῶν πρὸς τὴν αὐτοῦ τοῦ κυρίου δόξαν καὶ προθυμίαν ὑμῶν
