The Article and the Genitive Case

Can anyone provide any references to grammars or articles that mention or, preferably, discuss how nouns in the genitive case are less dependent on the article to establish definiteness then nouns in the nominative case? Given what the genitive case is, I think it's easy enough to infer why this would be, but I'm interested in reading what has been published on the question.
