Thanks for everyone’s feedback.

Steve, I am reading through your article. It is very interesting.

A better example I found, both are part of enumerations, Luke 24:10 Μαρία ἡ Ἰακώβου Vs. Mark 16:1 Μαρία ἡ τοῦ Ἰακώβου.

Steve, it sounds like, from your paper, you’re saying the extra article is based on either previous reference or a pause. Is that the assertion you are making here?

I guess I don’t understand why it would matter, in this specific case of the original post, why it would matter if it was Ἁλφαίου was in the second or third attributive position. Or in this case Ἰακώβου, since with Μαρία ἡ Ἰακώβου and Μαρία ἡ τοῦ Ἰακώβου is translated exactly the same. So it would appear there may be another reason why there is an extra article. If this is Marry the mother of Jesus, in both gospels she would have been previously mentioned, so it wouldn’t be previous reference.

I thought that the interesting thing about this construction, as Randall mentioned, is that it is apparently non-Classical. I think this construction is relatively straightforward to understand (see e.g. Steve’s explanations), but so is the alternative and it becomes an idiomatic language choice to favor one over the other.

There are some good ones in the Greek Deuterocanon, too:

I think this is different, it's basically "Moses the man", not "Moses of God".

It's a false hit from the search. I thought I had removed all of those, but apparently I missed one.
