Why is ἤρθη active singular here? I could see plural ("they took") or passive ("was taken"), but I'm surprised that this is both active and singular.
ἐξίσταντο δὲ πάντες καὶ διηποροῦντο, ἄλλος πρὸς ἄλλον λέγοντες, τί θέλει τοῦτο εἶναι;

I would understand τὸ περισσεῦσαν αὐτοῖς ("what leftovers they had"-- more 'literally' "that which exceeded for them") as the subject of ἤρθη, and κλασμάτων κόφινοι δώδεκα as a nominative appositive to τὸ περισσεῦσαν.
οὔτοι ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς πάντα θεοὶ θνητοῖς ὑπέδειξαν,
ἀλλὰ χρόνῳ ζητέοντες ἐφευρίσκουσιν ἄμεινον. (Xenophanes, Fragment 16)

It's not; it's a -θη aorist passive.
