πρὸ τοῦ γὰρ ἐλθεῖν τινα (Gal 2:12)

Post by Gregory Hartzler-Miller »

πρὸ τοῦ γὰρ ἐλθεῖν τινας ἀπὸ Ἰακώβου μετὰ τῶν ἐθνῶν συνήσθιεν·

This sentence presents us with both 1) a definite article: τοῦ... ἀπὸ Ἰακώβου and 2) an indefinite pronoun: τινας ἀπὸ Ἰακώβου

How do these two interact?

Could this be translated "some of the ones from James came..."? (Or maybe "the ones came, some from James...")

They don’t. πρὸ τοῦ ... ἐλθεῖν is an articular infinitive.
