2 Cor 8:7 - καὶ τῇ ἐξ ἡμῶν ἐν ὑμῖν ἀγάπῃ

Post by Jonathan Robie »

I'd like to hear your thoughts on this phrase.
2 Cor 8:7 wrote:ἀλλ᾽ ὥσπερ ἐν παντὶ περισσεύετε, πίστει καὶ λόγῳ καὶ γνώσει καὶ πάσῃ σπουδῇ καὶ τῇ ἐξ ἡμῶν ἐν ὑμῖν ἀγάπῃ, ἵνα καὶ ἐν ταύτῃ τῇ χάριτι περισσεύητε.
There are other readings:

τῇ ἐξ ἡμῶν ἐν ὑμῖν ἀγάπῃ
τῇ ἐξ ὑμῶν ἐν ἡμῖν ἀγάπῃ
τῇ έξ ὑμῶν είς ἡμᾶς ἀγάπῃ
τῇ ἐξ ὑμῶν ἐν ὑμῖν ἀγάπῃ
τῇ ἐξ ἡμῶν ἐν ἡμῖν ἀγάπῃ

I thought of this because of the discussion on Genitive. What do you think the role of "us" and "you" is in each of these phrases, and how is it expressed grammatically? Does the number of variants indicate ambiguity or difficulty in reading this?

The variants between ἡμῖν and ὑμῖν and between ἠμᾶς and ὑμᾶς are usually thought to be due to phonetic confusion during the Byzantine period.
