In 2 Timothy 2:13, is it possible that ἑαυτοῦ could read "his own"?

In 2 Timothy 2:13, is it possible that ἑαυτοῦ could read "his own"?

Post by Bill Ross »

I am not asking if it should read ἑαυτὸν as "his own" but rather if it is grammatically viable. IE: Ignoring context:
[2 Timothy 2:13 MGNT] (13) εἰ ἀπιστοῦμεν ἐκεῖνος πιστὸς μένει ἀρνήσασθαι γὰρ ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται

[2 Timothy 2:13 NASB20] (13) If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.
In other words, can I say categorically that it does not say "his own" based on the grammar or is it an open question to be resolved only by context?

No. That would be τοὺς ἰδίους. It's a different word in Greek.

Thanks. That became clearer by the many examples in this related question:

Why does the title have the genitive ἑαυτοῦ but the example text has the accusative ἑαυτόν???

I try to use the lexical form, generally.

Not to be pedantic (but I am... :) ) but ἑαυτοῦ is the lexical form:

ἑαυτοῦ -ῆς -οῦ ἑ, αὐτός reflex. pron. ⓐ himself, herself, itself, oneself

I think he's saying that this is why he used the genitive in the title of the thread. ;)

It seemed like a good idea in other situations but is admittedly unhelpful in the current context. Hopefully this does not mean a stint on Patmos.
