ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν Ἰωάννου

Post by Jonathan Robie »

John 3:25 wrote:ἐγένετο οὖν ζήτησις ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν Ἰωάννου μετὰ Ἰουδαίου περὶ καθαρισμοῦ.
Why ἐκ? Does this mean a dispute among John's disciples, or something else?

Here it is a partitive with the genitive. See Robertson A Grammar of the Greek New Testament in the Light of Historical Research, pp 514-515.

So you read ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν Ἰωάννου as "from some of the disciples of John"? And the dispute arose between "some of the disciples of John" and "a Jew"?
