Why ἐκ? Does this mean a dispute among John's disciples, or something else?

So you read ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν Ἰωάννου as "from some of the disciples of John"? And the dispute arose between "some of the disciples of John" and "a Jew"?George F Somsel wrote:Here it is a partitive with the genitive.
