Isaiah 13:21

Post by Saboi »

καὶ ἀναπαύσονται ἐκεῖ θηρία καὶ ἐμπλησθήσονται αἱ οἰκίαι ἤχου καὶ ἀναπαύσονται ἐκεῖ σειρῆνες καὶ δαιμόνια ἐκεῖ ὀρχήσονται

Ostriches are ruled out here, they are not associated with wailing or weeping and they are called חסידה in ancient Hebrew and a Sparrow is a צפור, so it is plausible it's the nightingale "ἀηδονίς"

I am not sure if the first word is the bird or its eggs. ציים/ὤεον
"The eggs shall sit there and the nightingales shall fill their houses with mourning"

The word וּשְׂעִירִים translates δαιμονία or σάτυροι but can also be a verb such as δακρύων "weep, shed tears" .

The following verse mentions δελφῖν "Dolphins" confirmed in Lamentations 4:3 that reads "sea monsters draw out the breasts", the reading here is δράκοντες, a cognate of δελφῖν and Isaiah 13:21 uses the unknown word אֹחִים but can translate ἀδελφόν "brothers" hence a possible misreading of δελφῖνας " dolphins". The animal in Jonah 1:17 was also a dolphin אליונה בןאמתי/Ἀρίονα Μηθυμναῖον (Hdt. 1.24)

The Book of Isaiah is written as a lamentation so animals associating with weeping prop up and
i also noticed the Hebrew verbs in 13:21 are Imperfect passive verbs in the 2nd person and for some reason the Septuagint verbs are 3rd person future plurals, why the change of tense>

The previous verse reads " Arabian pitch tent there" but also "ravens pitch tent there" and can even read "Corinthians pitch tent there" ( Κορίνθου, κόρακα or κόρεις).

I am not certain what the historical context of the verse, but Isaiah 13:17 mentions
the Μήδους and Κύρῳ later in 44:28 and the verses parallel Jeremiah 50:39.

διὰ τοῦτο κατοικήσουσιν ἰνδάλματα ἐν ταῖς νήσοις καὶ κατοικήσουσιν ἐν αὐτῇ θυγατέρες σειρήνων οὐ μὴ κατοικηθῇ οὐκέτι εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα

The word איים also an unknown animal, possibly a γυπός, ἰκτῖνος or αἰετός.

Both chapters mention the overthrowing of Σοδομα καὶ Γομορρα, these odd words might refer too ἄστυ Σκύθης & ἄστυ Κιμμερίων also allusions too Ξάνθος & Σκάμανδρος.

Hdt 1.15 Cimmerians, driven from their homes by nomad Scythians, came into Asia, and took Sardis,

This is relevant for the latter chapters alludes to the conquest of Sardis in 41:1-5
so perhaps the author is building up to that event, Isa 44:27 is confirmed in Hdt. 1.191 and Isa 7:14 in Hdt. 1.191 & Hdt. 3.15, the Greek language is best compared with that of Herodotus.

Isaiah indirectly refers too Sardis but the name is missing, but σάρδιον is a red-stone
and a translation of אדם "Ruddy" cf. ἐρύθημα, ξανθός, βρόδον, αἱματόεις, Σκυθικός, φοινός.
