Passage: Rom. 2:6, 7

hOS APODWSEI hKASTWi KATA TA ERGA AUTOU

TOIS MEN KAQ’ hUPOMONHN ERGOU AGAQOU DOXAN KAI TIMHN KAI AFQARSIAN ZHTOUSIN
ZWHN AIWNION

Issue: Those who seek “what”

I believe I am not too far astray in stating that the main contenders for
primary and secondary translations of verse 7 are as follows: [supplying
APODWSEI to verse 7]

“to those who by perseverance in a good work seek glory and honor and
immortality, [he shall render] eternal life”

“to those who seek eternal life by perseverance in a good work, [he shall
render] glory and honor and immortality”

The interposition between TOIS and ZHTOUSIN does seem to favor the first
option. Favoring the second option would be verse 10 were DOXA DE KAI TIMH
KAI EIRHNH are dispensed to the one who does good. Hence, option 1 might
give priority to syntax, while option 2 priority to context, or so it is
argued.

ERGOU AGAQOU may be a collective of TA ERGA.

What, appreciably, would we say the difference is between the two options?

What other alternatives come to mind that should receive our attention?

Perhaps related to this question is a problem I have encountered in the
Archives. I submitted a search for ZHTOUSIN ZWHN to no avail. If this has
been previously hashed, simply point me in the right direction.

Respectfully,

B. J. Williamson
