Many commentators have differed on who the hO PARADOUS is in John 19:11b. While some have speculated on Judas Iscariot, Caiphas, others (like Godet) have argued that this is a reference to the Sanhedrin. I know that the definite article here is being used as a substantive for "one" who delivered Jesus to Pilate. However, both the article and participle PARADOUS are singular and not plural. Is there any examples in the Greek New Testament where a singular substantive can refer to a group or a plural number of people?
