As I pointed out earlier, the grammatical structure of the Acts 16:3 passage can just as easily be taken to indicate that Paul did the circumcision. The answer to Eddie's question does not lie in grammar. Surely in the GNT causative active verbs are not uncommon. Perhaps one should do a study just on PERITEMNW to see if it is frequently used as a causative active verb. It wouldn't surprise me if it is.

The Rabbis can do circumcisions. So Paul might be the one who did the
actual act on Timothy. Applying a cultural filter to a translation is
good, if you understand not only the target culture, but the source one as
well.
Does anyone have any references to ancient Jewish practices?
