[B-Greek] Acts 16,3

>From doing some quick research on the web, a mohel does not have to be a
Rabbi. But many of the mohelim (plural for mohel) are Rabbis or Cantors.
Of those who advertise their services, those who are not clergy seem to be
physicians. But from an unscientific sampling of the hits I got, the
latter are few in number, most mohelim these days are clergy.

In either case, to be certified as a mohel, the candidate is required to
take special religious and medical training. You don't have to be a member
of the clergy or a physician to become a mohel.

So the question is still open as to whether Paul was a mohel. He might
have been. He seemed to be a jack-of-all-trades as far as Jewishness is
concerned.

Unless we can find NT references that would indicate if Paul was or was not
a mohel, I think the question of who circumcised Timothy can not be
defiantly answered.

Or maybe we are thinking too hard on the problem. Maybe we read the text
in its simpliest form and say that Paul did the actual work as strictly
recorded because the culture would certainly allow for that.

As far as I know the person who usually performs the circumcision is called
the mohel.
So it is not the rabbi.
