Kelly, I had a terrible time in my first three semesters of Greek -- I really
struggled with it. The key? Perseverence. By the time I graduated I received
the departmental award for "Most Outstanding Graduate" (or whatever they called
it) in my major (Classics, though they called it Ancient Studies). But nobody
looking at my performance in those first three semesters would have predicted
it! As a sidebar, I found it really helpful when teaching Greek -- I could
actually relate better to the struggling students than to the whiz kids. You
see, even if you are not doing as well as you would like, you are still learning
a lot more than than you think. Make the goal really to learn, and that will
stay with you the rest of your life.
