I have been reading Greek in the modern style for over 20 years and
teach others to do so, *as a living language*
This has not adversely affected me in the vowel issue you raise, since
Greek, as all languages, forms meaning in larger constructions of
word-groups. These groups evoke the correct vowel within any given word
in that group; otherwise, we use circumlocutions to avoid ambiguity.
