There is a new edition of Horrock's
Greek: A History of the Language and Its Speakers.

The first edition was great.
>From the review it looks like the second edition is so good that I'm
going to have to buy it, too.

>From <http://www.classics.ukzn.ac.za/reviews/11-05hor.htm>:

I suppose the only thing missing in the volume would be a
description of when and how the Greek language added time
to the verb. [that was a joke, of course, the ancients knew that they
already had it in the verb. :-)] But it illustrates how it can help to
think of the language diachronically as well as synchronically, and
one must ask diachronic questions of any synchronic position.
