Hi Randall,
<So far, no one has volunteered to elucidate the history of what is
called 'Erasmian' pronunciation or to advocate its use in classrooms.>
Just make sure the guy brings his sheep.

Subject: [B-Greek] Erasmus at SBL
This Fall at SBL in San Francisco there will be session devoted to
the question of Greek Pronunciation. The panel session will include
thirty minute segments of: a) an overview of Greek phonology from
Alexander the Great to the modern era, b) a presentation from the
perspective of Modern Greek, c) a presentation from the perspective
of "Living Koine", d) a presentation from the Erasmian persepctive,
and e) a 30 minute open Question and Answer.
Everything has been in place for some time except "Erasmus". So
far, no one has volunteered to elucidate the history of what is
called 'Erasmian' pronunciation or to advocate its use in classrooms.
This is ironic because Erasmian is far and away the most common
pronunciation system in use in seminaries and universities. Granted,
this opportunity has only been communicated to a relatively small
number of people. So I would like to let the list have an oppportunity
to submit a proposal.
Requirements: a presenter must join or be a current member of
SBL, and will attend the SBL conference 19-22 November in SF
this Fall. An accepted proposal will be from someone with
teaching experience and an academic background to responsibly
deal either with the history or advocacy of Erasmian pronunciations.
(These can range anywhere from a "Restored Attic" to various current
American versions. One version is enough, in order to discuss and
present the principles involved.)
If you would like to undertake this, or know someone who would,
please email me offlist.
blessings
