I've read the thread on "syntactical chiasmus" with interest. Does
Colossians 1:3-4 offer us any help in understanding Philemon 4-5? I'm
going to just ask a few questions (because I've done better at that than
at answering them on B-greek). I'm sure that others have noticed this,
but I don't remember anyone drawing our attention to it.
Col. 1:3-4
EUCARISTOUMEN TWi QEWi PATRI TOU KURIOU hHMWN IHSOU CRISTOU PANTOTE PERI
hUMWN PROSEUCOMENOI, AKOUSANTES THN PISTIN hUMWN EN CRISTWi IHSOU KAI THN
AGAPHN hHN ECETE EIS PANTAS TOUS hAGIOUS
Phile. 4-5
EUCARISTW TWi QEWi MOU PANTOTE MNEIAN SOU POIOUMENOS EPI TWN PROSUCWN
MOU, AKOUWN SOU THN AGAPHN KAI THN PISTIN, hHN ECEIS PROS TON KURION
IHSOUN KAI EIS PANTAS TOUS hAGIOUS,
Doesn't the clearer syntax of the verses in Colossians give us a clue
about the less clear syntax of Philemon 5? In Colossians the PISTIS
clearly is directed to Christ and the AGAPH to EIS PANTAS TOUS hAGIOUS.
