Dear Clay:
Thanks for your research into the commentaries. You have more of them than I!
Paul's usage is not determinative for the Johannine usage; but both spoke and
wrote Koine Greek so there must be some KOINWNIA or commonalty of meaning (pun
intended). I pointed up Galatians 1:6-7 because the two words are there
juxtaposed in a manner which clearly brings out the difference between them,
IMHO.
My view of John 14:16 is roughly
> ALLOS "another of the same kind,"
> hETEROS "another of a different kind" :
compare the English Greek-derived words "heterodoxy" and "allotropy". This
distinction is not cut-and-dried, as others have posted. But in John 14:16
we could reasonably infer that the ALLON PARAKLHTON is of the same Substance
as the first Paraclete in 1 John 2:1, PARAKLHTOV ECOMEN PROS TON PATERA IHSOUN
CRISTON DIKAION.
But immediately we get into forbidden theological territory, so I'll end it
there without further ado.
