Is there a Greek dialect where the lambda looks like its Roman counterpart
or this just a typo in the book?

I think this is simply a Gallicized (Frenchified? French-fried?) form of
the Greek noun hOLKAS (gen. hOLKADOS): merchant ship. Since the "Greek"
word is entered in upper-case Greek letters, there's no rough breathing,
and even so it wouldn't be pronounced in the French form anyhow. So, I
rather think this is simply a greek-character spelling of a Gallicized
form--holchade--of the Greek noun hOLKAS.
