Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I was at our chuch Bible study last night, and we are currently
studying Hebrews 9. In verses 3-4 there is a decription of the
Holy of Holies which the NIV renders:
"behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy
Place, which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-
covered ark of the covenant"
This seems to be true to the Greek (except for the "of incense"
which seems to have been inserted by implication or
possibly due to some particular MS evidence - since the
NIV was based on ecclectic texts).
Now, the problem is that this description is in contradiction with
the OT. In the OT the description of the Most Holy Place
or Holy of Holies consistently states that only the ark was
inside. The golden alter (of incense) was in the Holy
Place before the Most Holy Place.
The Greek does not seem to shed much light on this
problem (well not to me anyway).
Can anyone offer some explanations?
cheers,
Andrew
