Someone asked about Luke 1.57 last week (sorry; I did not keep the
message) and I was reading Joel Green's new commentary on Luke over
the weekend and noticed his comment on this verse. He says that it
is not tautologous to have . . . TOU TEKEIN AUTHN KAI EGENNHSEN
hUION because Luke has paid careful attention to proper narrative
order. Thus, although John's birth has been prophesied, Luke does
not confirm that the infant in the womb is a boy until the moment of
birth. Thus in 1.41 TO BREFOS jumps in the womb. And in 1.57, the
time comes for her to give birth, "And she bore a son". The fresh
element is thus the confirmation of the prophecy (1.13 KAI hH GUNH
SOU ELISABET GENNHSEI hUION SOI . . .), told in its proper narrative
sequence.
All the best
Mark
