The authorities I have available in my meager little home library line up
this way:

"a little lower" KJV and NIV

"for a little while" RSV, NEB, Dummelow and A Grammatical Analysis of the
Greek New Testament.

I point this out *not* because I think counting authorities can settle this
kind of question, but simply to illustrate that someone must think there is
a reasonable argument for the latter interpretation. Does anyone have some
more extended commentary (International Critical Commentary? Anchor
Bible?) on the Greek text here that goes into this issue in more detail?

BTW, I found the variations in the Psalm passage similarly interesting. Of
course, the KJV has "a little lower than the angels." I don't have the NIV
OT. The RSV has "little less than God." And the NEB has "little less than
a god." [Zounds! Shades of John 1:1c. ;-)]
