I, too, have been using Swanson's "New Testament Manuscripts" with
profit. Was it Swanson who came in for such scathing criticism
(seemingly warranted to a significant degree, at least) on the TC list
for his work on the papyri, or was that some other name?
Here and there in the volume I'm looking at, I see the little dots
under some letters that show uncertainty about them (surely there must
be a name for that "little dot" that I've never heard or learned). If
Swanson is honest about which letters he marks as uncertain (i.e., he
doesn't overestimate his certainty level and fail to mark some letters
that he should), and if he's accurate overall, then I don't see any
reason to quibble. I note that Metzger has an endorsement on the back
cover, and the other endorser, Ralph Winter (whom I do not know) calls
it "scrupulously accurate."
If there has been any widespread negative assessment of this
particular work, I, too, would like to know about it and be pointed to
where I can read up on it.
Blessings! (Acts 3:26)
