Dear Theodore,
I am learning German for a similar reason. I find the following to be most
helpful:
Schwarz/Rot/Gold, "The German Handbook: A Practical Grammar Guide" by Paul
Webster, Cambridge University Press, 1987 (128 pages).
The book is clearly written, well laid out, and concise. It has proved to be
the perfect length for reading/re-reading as well as for reference. The
index is adequate and one of the final chapters gives a six page list of the
most common strong verbs (with their infinitive, present tense, simple past
tense, perfect tense forms), which I have found myself coming back to again
and again.
Sincerely,
David Luckensmeyer
