the only problem with using the church fathers and the rabbinic literature
in a discussion of the NT concept of adoption is that these sources are very
late (in terms of the NT texts themselves). because they are much later,
they may not really shed much light on either the greek words used in the NT
for this procedure and they also may not accurately reflect NT practices as
those practices may have changed over the years. in short, we need
contemporaneous documents in order to flesh out the NT perspective. where
such contemporaneous texts exist we are very fortunate; and where they do
not we may not allow ourselves the privilege of filling the gaps with later
materials.

best, and welcome on behalf of no one but myself,

Jim
