For all of Jim West's not-altogether-unjustified cynicism regarding the
PAROUSIA of BDAG, I think that George's allusion to Samuel Beckett's
tragicomedy is an apt one. As the name of the awaited one, "Godot" suggests
"dear little God," and the waiting of those two clowns is not altogether
unlike the experience of some believers who wait upon the Lord, believing
that the wait is worth while, however frustrating and to all appearances
self-defeating it may seem. It HAS been a long wait and it COULD be that
the wait will go beyond the most-recently- promised October of 2000, but
believers have waited a lot longer for the PAROUSIA of their Lord and have
been confident, however deluded they may be, that the wait is worthwhile. I
for one DO hope to see BDAG within my lifetime, although it is eminently
possible that an unknown calamity will carry me off today or tomorrow, and
I expect that BDAG will have been worth waiting for.
