Dear Richard G.,

Which is, of course, almost exactly as BAGD has it under QEOFOROS, now that
I look for it there, "god-bearing, inspired." BAGD even has it as a second
entry, explaining there that this is a "surname" used by Ignatius. I bow to
my better, with sincere appreciation.

Well, neither can I. In my own defense, I point out that I was talking off
the top of my head, having read Ignatius (in Lake's English translation)
years ago, and believing that Ignatius went to his martyr's death willingly,
thinking of himself as an offering, so I thought of a reason in light of the
listing in BAGD I saw for FOROS. I could have worded it better, but I was
still wrong.

But, of course this idea of Ignatius' as an offering to God is probably most
clearly contained in his epistle to the Romans. So Ignatius writes at II:2.
PLEON MOI MH PARASCHSQE TOU SPONDISQHNAI QEWi, hWS ETI QUSIASTHRION hETOIMON
ESTIN
Give no more to me than that I be poured out to God, while an altar is still
prepared

Then again at IV:2
LITANEUSATE TON CRISTON hUPER EMOU, hINA DIA TWN ORGANWN TOUTWN QUSIA
hEUREQW.
Petition Christ for me, that through these tools I may be found an offering.

You have my very special thanks for setting me straight here.
