
{"id":10566,"date":"2010-05-20T12:38:29","date_gmt":"2010-05-20T20:38:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/?p=10566"},"modified":"2010-05-20T12:39:51","modified_gmt":"2010-05-20T20:39:51","slug":"researchers-study-male-contraception","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2010\/05\/20\/researchers-study-male-contraception\/","title":{"rendered":"Researchers study male contraception"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><br \/>\nBY SUSAN DICKSON <\/strong><em><br \/>\nStaff Writer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>UNC researchers James Tsuruta and Paul Dayton have received a $100,000 grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to support their research on the use of therapeutic ultrasound for male contraception. <\/p>\n<p>Tsuruta, an assistant professor in the Laboratories for Reproductive Biology in UNC\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s department of pediatrics, said he and Dayton based their research on studies from the 1970s that showed that one application of therapeutic ultrasound to the testis could result in up to six months of reversible infertility. Their preliminary research, conducted over the past three years, was funded by the Parsemus Foundation. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been able to show that we can apply ultrasound to the testis and that it depletes the developing sperm cells,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Tsuruta said.  <\/p>\n<p>With the year-long grant, the researchers hope to determine the effects of the repeated use of ultrasound. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Our primary concerns are safety, efficacy and reversibility, so we are going to determine what the minimum effective dose of ultrasound is,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Tsuruta said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We also hope to have an apparatus designed that would be appropriate for use in developing nations by the end of the grant period \u00e2\u20ac\u201c something that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s simple to operate but very robust.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Tsuruta said the method is non-invasive and painless.
