
{"id":10791,"date":"2010-06-03T14:14:18","date_gmt":"2010-06-03T22:14:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carrborocitizen.com\/main\/?p=10791"},"modified":"2010-06-03T14:33:11","modified_gmt":"2010-06-03T22:33:11","slug":"carrboro-calling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ibiblio.org\/carrborocitizen\/main\/2010\/06\/03\/carrboro-calling\/","title":{"rendered":"Carrboro calling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BY KIRK ROSS<\/strong><em><br \/>\nStaff Writer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Carrboro  \u00e2\u20ac\u201d\u00c2\u00a0It ain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t much, but they call it home \u00e2\u20ac\u201c at last.<br \/>\nWCOM-FM, 103.5 on your radio dial, will go live again this weekend after more than a week on auto-pilot while an intrepid band of volunteers unhooked the station from its Greensboro Street location and reassembled it in a concrete-block building just down from Cat\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Cradle.<\/p>\n<p>Leo Reynolds, head of the station\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s steering committee, said the plan is to restart live broadcasting with the Saturday Morning Music Hall.<\/p>\n<p>On the air for five years, WCOM\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s old spot in a former drive-up window was less than ideal, with a leaky roof in the control room, not much office space and a porta-john out back.<\/p>\n<p>A tour of the new, freshly painted digs includes a snug but functional production studio, an office lobby, a more-open and much-drier on-air studio and \u00e2\u20ac\u201c one of the more exciting features of the new facility \u00e2\u20ac\u201c indoor plumbing. Pointing to the modest half-bath, Reynolds smiled. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re all happy to see that,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said.<\/p>\n<p>And then there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the train. From the station\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s back door, you could hit the tracks with a well-thrown dinner roll.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153If you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re on the air when the train goes by, people will hear it,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Reynolds said. John Paul McClellan and David Minter, two other volunteers reassembling the station, agreed that the train would play a bigger role in the new location.
