She died in the Highland Hills Apartments fire, a fast-moving blaze that left 20 of our neighbors with barely more than the clothes on their backs. And though the residents have been stoic as they recover, they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll need our help to heal both body and soul.<\/p>\n<p>Friday night at Cat\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Cradle there will be a benefit for the victims of the Highland Hills fire. The show starts at 8 p.m. and doors open at 7. We ask that you consider attending, even if it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s just to stop by and make a donation.<\/p>\n<p>It is time to step up, Carrboro.<\/p>\n<p>They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re counting on you.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><strong>Taking it to the next level<\/strong><br \/>\nThe grasslands that have filled in around the shrinking University Lake are turning a pale brown now and on the horizon there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no sign of the kind of steady, soaking rains that will stay the water\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s steady retreat.<\/p>\n<p>Even without the drain on them from a growing community, this time of year Cane Creek Reservoir and University Lake are losing a half million gallons per day due to evaporation.<\/p>\n<p>There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s nothing we can do about that, but there is something that can be done \u00e2\u20ac\u201d must be done \u00e2\u20ac\u201d about the millions of gallons drawn into our homes and businesses every day.<\/p>\n<p>Today (Thursday) the OWASA Board of Directors meets to contemplate upping restrictions to stage two.<\/p>\n<p>One of the reasons for this is that we are still consuming more than the target the utility set when we moved to stage one restrictions last month.<\/p>\n<p>Part of that is due to the longer spell of warmer weather, which keeps demand high for the university\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s chiller plants. But part of it is because we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re still using more water than we should.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge for all of us ought to be conserving water. But for too many around here, the big hurdle seems to be taking this drought seriously.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Time to vote<\/strong><br \/>\nThis Friday, early voting opens at Carrboro Town Hall, the Public Library on West Tyron in Hillsborough and on Thompson Street in Pittsboro. The new early-voting site at the Chapel Hill Post Office on Franklin Street opens Monday.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve included times and addresses in a handy info box on Page 3 and urge citizens in both counties to make their marks.<\/p>\n<p>Getting the early-voting rules passed and opening up opportunities for more people was no easy thing.<br \/>\nThis is not just your chance to help decide the future of the government closest to the people, but to signify your support of increasing participation in elections.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our neighbors in need This community is already reeling from the loss of a true friend, and there was a fitting tribute to Gloria Suarez Tuesday night at Town Hall.
